Remembering Veterans on Memorial Day

From humble beginnings…

Raise the Stars & Stripes one more time!

Memorial Day is steeped in tradition. One popular but humorous social tradition, is that the wearing of white clothing is now acceptable. Strange custom but a modern tradition, nonetheless. Many families spend the holiday gathering together to enjoy the start of the summer season with picnics and plenty of outdoor activities. The most important of all, is the visitation of fallen soldiers graves and honoring them with flowers and kind memories.

The original holiday started out as “Decoration Day.” The practice of placing flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers extends to most cultures around the world. Here in America, the earliest observances of that long-standing tradition stems from the Civil War, where some say the custom began officially in early 1860′s. It wasn’t until after World War II that the holiday took on new meaning for the modern generation.

After WWII, Memorial Day became official.

Today, we honor our soldiers with parades and barbeques, as Memorial Day is used at the “unofficial” start to summer. One key observance is the placing of the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknowns by the current President of the United States, at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Veterans and their families celebrate in their own ways, because for some the memories of conflict are a private matter.

Since, we do have a Navy Veteran on staff, we respect and value the men and women who have served and are currently serving in the United States Military Forces. We choose to honor them with tastefully designed Military-themed Christmas Greeting Cards, Note Cards and Address Labels. When you choose Stonehouse Collection for your Greeting Card needs, your support of America’s military personnel is full-circle.

Easter Traditions from Around the World – Start Your Own!

Posted by Stonehouse Team on Mar 20, 2013 in Greeting Cards

Not all Easter costumes are alike.

Depending on what area of the country you might be from, there are many different yet traditional ways of celebrating Easter. Some of the family traditions might include things like buying new clothes to wear on Easter. This is similar to the practice of some Asian countries of wearing new clothes at the start of the new year. Our modern Easter celebration here in American, with the Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs, comes from immigrants who brought the custom of coloring Easter Eggs with them. Bright colors were emphasized to invoke the fresh feeling of Spring, which is a time of renewal, growth and family gatherings.
