Easter egg coloring party: Each year I let my children invite friends over to decorate batches of sugar cookies for Christmas and they have an awesome time, so I thought “why not do it for Easter?” Just purchase inexpensive kits at the drug or grocery store in several different styles of decorating & set up different craft stations for each one. I normally buy 2-3 kits of each style so more than one child can work on the same activity at the same time and we don’t run out if one particular style proves to be a hit with the kids.

Jelly Bean mystery trail to Easter basket: Purchase 2-3 bags of brightly colored jelly beans in assorted colors & sizes. Start a little trail from your children’s bedroom doors to a cleverly hidden basket somewhere in the house. They will love the tasty treasure hunt.
Fun Foods: Whether you want to serve this at the egg decorating party, Easter day or tuck into the kids lunches in the days prior, these foods are sure to be a hit:
- Edible Easter basket lunch: Put finely shredded lettuce (thing Easter basket “grass”) and baby carrots on the bottom of small green plastic baskets (I save the ones from strawberries). Chicken nuggets served with ranch or BBQ sauce serve as the “eggs” & the carrots add color. For fun sprinkle some jelly beans or add Easter candy for additional color.
Finger sandwiches: Use Easter cookie cutters shaped liked bunnies or eggs. Peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are always a hint as filling, but you can also use some of your hard boiled eggs and make egg salad. Make sandwiches cut with cookie cutters shaped like an egg, baby chick, or bunny. Use a variety of sandwich fillings such as PB&J or egg salad. For a super sweet treat, try peanut butter with Nutella.

Kind of like Santa & Christmas, I found myself wondering how the Easter Bunny came to be. A rabbit delivering colored eggs? Hmmmmm. Apparently the origins trace back to 17th century Germany. The Easter Bunny & brightly colored eggs tradition was introduced to the U.S by German settlers during the 18th century.
According to legend, children would build “nests” often of brightly colored fabric or even their own caps/bonnets in their homes. If they had been “good” the Easter bunny would come & lay festively colored eggs in the “nest”. As the tradition spread, the “nest” morphed into the modern Easter basket, followed by the ubiquitous and marginally edible PEEPS! (I kid, I kid).

But why a rabbit & colored eggs? Apparently the rabbit/hare is an ancient symbol for fertility. Since rabbits and hares give birth to large litters in the early spring, these became symbols of the rising fertility of the earth at the Spring (Vernal) Equinox. And the colored eggs? No one knows for sure, but the theory is that the eggs mimic the bright and brilliant colors that accompany Spring. Of course those wacky Grimm Brothers have an alternate theory having to do with a pagan fertility goddess. For the full article on the legend, click here. It’s on Wiki, so therefore it MUST be true, no? So dazzle your friends with your knowledge, and stick this tale on your Facebook status.
Regardless, Spring is a time for renewal and fun traditions. At Stonehouse, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.
